When I first heard about this term backlink, I was a little confused of what it was. I thought it was a link back to the previous page. ? I know that’s silly right? Then I thought, that can’t be true. How does that matter for SEO.
Well, a backlink is actually a link that other websites give to your website to reference some content on your website. Let’s say your friend rights a blog post about your business and provides a link to your website that becomes a backlink. Or you post a comment on some blog post or article and include a link to your blog for additional info, then that’s a backlink too. Just like in the real world how you point out to stores or a restaurants if you want to tell something about that place, in the online world you give them a backlink.
The reason backlinks are useful is because they are the way google or any other internet search engine determines what websites are ranked on top. Well not all backlinks are used by search engines, but for right now, we won’t get into that part. You would be amazed to know that Google uses over 200 factors to determine which website should be displayed on the top of the search results and backlinks is the number one factor. Backlinks have some sort of a ranking too. Backlinks work better when bigger website link your website. Google always puts the big or more popular websites above the lesser know ones (I think this is obvious right). Also, Google looks for how naturally you are getting backlinks so they know that you aren’t just paying other people for links.
The quickest way to gain backlinks is to email people you know that have websites and ask for a backlink. I will soon write another article on some easy ways to get backlinks. So stay tuned by subscribing to this blog. See you next time!
